Most countries have many fantastic cities that make perfect vacations depending on what you want to do and see. But these same countries usually have one city that stands out as the place you need to visit in that country and this city overshadows the others.
A great example is England. The country is filled with delightful medium to large cities including Birmingham, Liverpool and Manchester, each with its own character and allure, yet the primary city of choice when you think of visiting the country is undoubtedly London.
But sometimes these second cities are actually better vacation cities than the more popular ones. Here is a list of some second cities for you to consider for a fantastic vacation.
Go to Melbourne Not Sydney
Australia has a host of great cities that all sit on its coasts. Each is beautiful and filled with charm. However, the city that most people know and are attracted to in the country is Sydney. This is for good reason. Sidney is a beautiful coastal city with every big city amenity imaginable.
However, the less popular Melbourne has been in the conversation as a potentially better vacation city than Sydney. Where Sydney is all big city glitz and glamour, and an in your face type of presence, Melbourne makes its claim as more subtle and laid back. It has made a name for itself because of an abundance of green parks and beautiful gardens providing numerous areas for walks, bike rides, and hikes.
The city has an abundance of bay beaches, and the beautiful Yarra River running through it. Throughout the city there are lovely streets, cozy cafes & coffee shops, and a selection of eateries with an international array of cuisines that can compare with any city anywhere. But Melbourne is not all small city charm, it has big city attractions as we including being the home of Australia’s F1 Grand Prix, and The Australian Open Tennis Tournament. A visit to the city is sure to please anyone looking for big city allure and big town feel.
Go to Taormina Not Rome
Italy is a favorite destination for romantics and those who want culture and beauty to highlight their vacation. Its main cities, are filled with old world charm that dates back to before Europe was formed. Its most populated city, Rome, is an international hot spot for businesspeople and vacationers. The food here is perhaps the best anywhere and the atmosphere of the city makes you feel like you are visiting your favorite uncle. Rome is definitely a destination worth visiting, but a perhaps more attractive Italian city is Taormina on the island of Sicily located in the south of the country.
The first thing you notice about Taormina, is the weather. The summer stretches longer than nearly any other city in Europe delivering endless sunshine and hardly any rain.
The island of Siciliy across the Strait of Messina, and is hugged by the Mediterranean, the Ionian and the Tyrrhenian seas on the other three sides. These bodies of water deliver warm currents that make the waters of Sicily perfect for swimming and water sports. And the water is crystal clear making it perfect for snorkeling and scuba.
The island of Sicily itself boasts mountains, hills, and even a volcano, with an incredible array of colors, crystal-clear water and amazingly beautiful sea beds. Off Sicily’s coast sit smaller islands including The Aeolians, Egadi and Pelagie Islands, Pantelleria and Ustica, that are all accessible by boat from Sicily. Each is worthy of a visit.
As with any Italian city on the water, Sicily has beautiful five-star resorts and comparable cuisine that would satisfy any food connoisseur. And the shopping is great also.
The island is like a well preserved museum filled with buildings, theaters and antiquities that tell the story of European history.
Taormina is a lover’s paradise and a one of a kind destination, and definitely worthy of a long stay even though it is Italy’s second city.
